Akka Specify

Akka Specify is spec-driven development tooling that builds an agentic system from plain-language specifications and checks every change against them. Developers and people who do not write code author the specifications together, in their AI harness. The Akka Specify Plugin, installed in the harness, plans the work, implements it, tests it and reviews it against the specification.

Because every change is checked against the specification, the specification and the code stay in step. The specification records why the system is the way it is, and it remains readable by the people who own the requirements.

What a specification covers

A specification is a set of files in your repository, versioned with the code. It covers:

  • The goals of the system: its purpose, how success is measured, and who decides what.

  • Functional requirements across agents, tools, orchestration, memory, APIs and user interface.

  • The knowledge the system needs, and where it comes from.

  • The risk envelope: what could go wrong and where the system operates. It becomes the controls that Akka Verify enforces.

  • The operational envelope: service levels, regions, latency and token budget.

  • The improvement policy: what the system optimizes toward and how far it may tune itself. Akka Optimize works within it.

The first three are written by the people who build the system. The envelopes and the policy are written by the people who govern it, such as risk, security, operations and finance teams.

Building against the specification

The plugin turns a specification into a plan, the plan into tasks, and the tasks into Akka SDK components with tests. Each step is a command you run in the harness, such as /akka:specify, /akka:plan, /akka:tasks and /akka:implement. /akka:converge adds work that the specification still requires to the task list. /akka:inspect exercises a running service through its endpoints, state and user interface. /akka:docs generates project documentation and checks it.

Exit conditions and conformance

Exit conditions define when a feature or a system is done. Your organization can make some of them required for every project, from a catalog that covers functional behavior, reliability, security and compliance, agentic AI safety, documentation and more. Auditors check each exit condition.

/akka:status shows every exit condition and its state. /akka:conform runs the auditors in scope and returns a verdict. /akka:ship runs the auditors for a review or release target and, when they pass, the steps your organization defines for shipping. In enforced mode, a change that does not meet its exit conditions is blocked before it merges. In à la carte mode, you choose which checks to run.

Fitting your process

Akka Specify works in your repository and your CI. /akka:harnesses generates CI, scanning and supply-chain assets, and the plugin reads the results of the scanners you already run. /akka:reliability adds resilience tests against live endpoints. You deploy to Akka, or record releases from your own deployment system.

Modernizing an existing system

Akka Specify can recover what a legacy system does, turn that behavior into checks that a replacement must pass, and show that the replacement behaves the same.
